Need some research help
by JeffT inso i'm working on another (fictional) book project and i need some historical help.
i came into the borg in 1973, just as they were starting the new elder arrangement.
i know that before that there was a presiding overseer who (as i understand it) ran the show.

Do you intend to self publish or seek an agent? Back in the dim, now distant past I wrote a YA series which was published in the 1970s. I wonder if specifying a religion for your character is a good idea. Janet Reid takes questions from writers. She's an agent I trust. She has two blogs. Submit a question through her queryshark blog or directly to her email. Ask.
The idea sounds good. I wish you success.

Hospice and JW
by Terry Clees ini am a bereavement coordinator with a hospice company.
i have noticed that most often jw patients decline chaplain care and also the family ends up declining bereavement care.
where i work our chaplains do not proselytize at all...they merely walk with the patient in their faith at the end of life.

Within Witness comfort zone is a caring, liked elder. Those are few and far between. But you can contact the nearest congregation and explain the need for an elder visit. Elders are semi-trained, but at least your Witness patient will have someone visit from within their comfort zone. You and the clergy onsite will make them suspicious, both of your motives and your methods.
If elders are not already visiting (you may not recognize them as church elders.), then call. Make them do their job. Shame them if necessary, though politely. If you wonder about the status of visitors, ask them if they are 'from the kingdom hall.'
There ARE educated Witnesses, but the organization is deeply suspicious of secularly educated people. This is especially so of anything resembling psychology, psychiatry, or religion.

Oh and that song, Lois, first appeared in Songs of Praise, the 1928 songbook.

At 90 I'm dependent, which I hate. I'm diabetic, with all that comes with it. I sleep in two hour bursts. I've developed seizures. I forget everything, then remember everything, even things I'd rather forget. I was a Company Servant when we had those, then Congregation Servant. You may have heard me at District Conventions.
A long train of things finally led me to resign as an elder, citing declining health. I keep my opinions to myself for the sake of my wife and kids and grand and great grand children who are firmly committed to the Watchtower. I met, though I did not know well, many of the historical figures: Knorr, Franz [a repulsive little man], Miller [who never got over being a Marine.] and others. Macmillan was a guest in our home a time or two. Liked him.
Now, I believe some of the basic doctrines, but reject the self-elected governing body as a scriptural institution. There's a stout list of things I do not believe. But I most object to the self-entitled, un-scriptural views of those in authority. They browbeat their fellows. Okay enough of an old man's complaints.

I turn 90 in the fall. This post touches my heart. I'm dependent on family. Only one of my children knows how I feel about the Watchtower these days. Aside from doctrinal issues, it fails its people. Family comes first. A belief system, an unstable, shifting, self-aggrandizing system is unworthy.
